Searching For Goya by Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca

Inspired by Francisco de Goya’s transformative art, award-winning Flamenco dancer Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca present the Canadian premiere of their latest production, which explores the Spanish artist’s response to the political turmoil and injustices of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Choreographed by Martin Santangelo, the artistic director, and principal dancer Soledad Barrio, Searching For Goya showcases a company of nine dancers, singers, and musicians reviving Goya’s spirit on stage through approximately 10-12 vignettes inspired by the Spanish painter’s works. The scenes, music, song lyrics, choreography, wardrobe, and lighting are original and were created specifically for this production.

The evening-length production will include interpretations of works such as Los Ensacados, Disparate Desordenado, Disparate Ridículo, Disparate Pobre, El Quitasol, Disparate Puntual, LLuvia de toros, Las Camas de la Muerte,Temeridad de Martincho, El diestrísimo estudiante de Falces, Embozado burla al toro con sus quiebros, Duelo a Garrotazos, La romería de San Isidro, El entierro de la Sardina, Perro and Semihundido among others.

There has been no company I have been so glad to discover as Noche Flamenca and, above all, its lead dancer, Soledad Barrio. I can think of no current ballet star in the world as marvelous as she.
