A father (Sergi López) and his son arrive at a rave deep in the mountains of southern Morocco. They’re searching for Mar — daughter and sister — who vanished months ago at one of these endless, sleepless parties. Surrounded by electronic music and a raw, unfamiliar sense of freedom, they hand out her photo again and again. Hope is fading but they push through and follow a group of ravers heading to one last party in the desert. As they venture deeper into the burning wilderness, the journey forces them to confront their own limits.

16th century. Magellan, a young and ambitious Portuguese navigator, rebels against the power of the King, who doesn’t support his dream of discovering the world. He persuades the Spanish Crown to fund his bold expedition to the fabled lands of the East. The voyage is exhausting beyond expectations, with hunger and mutiny pushing the crew to their limits. Upon reaching the islands of the Malayan Archipelago, Magellan’s mind changes. He becomes obsessed with conquest and conversion, which sparks violent uprisings beyond his control. Marta (Alba Rohrwacher), a high-school teacher, and her partner Antonio (Elio Germano), a chef, live in Rome. While Antonio’s star is rising, Marta seems to lack passion and, moreover, an interest in Antonio’s recipes. One day, after many years together, the pair split after a seemingly trivial argument. Marta withdraws into herself while Antonio jumps into his new endeavour, a restaurant of his own creation. Soon after, everything changes in Marta’s world when she discovers that her loss of appetite has more to do with her health than the pains of separation. Now, with time running out, Marta must learn who she is and what she lives for.

Set on Hispaniola in 1819, before the independence of the Dominican Republic, Under the Same Sun chronicles the attempt of Lázaro (David Castillo), a self-fashioned Spanish explorer, and his companion Mei (Valentina Shen Wu), a master silk maker from China, to bring high-quality silk production to the Americas. The pair meet Baptiste (Jean Jean), a Haitian army deserter who’s living as a sort of hermit in Lázaro’s father’s home, and he offers to help them navigate the wilderness area they seek to tame. The three form a partnership and together face the challenges of the environment and changing circumstances, from the daunting jungle that seems to want to devour them to the violent French colonists who roam the rivers in search of people to subdue or eliminate.
