'108 Cuchillo de Palo'

'108 Cuchillo de Palo'

Screening of 108 Cuchillo de Palo at the 16th Latin American Film Festival in Ottawa.

Exposing a segment of Paraguay's dark and all too recent past, Renate Costa's intimate, personal documentary investigates the persecution of homosexuals in Paraguay through the memory of her uncle, Rodolfo Costa. Rodolfo was one of the "108" gay men publicly ostracized, arrested, and often tortured under the auspices of dictator Alfredo Stroessner until 1989.

At once a family portrait and biting political investigation, Costa's feature debut is a haunting depiction of a country's shameful past. All the more moving is the fact that the generation of perpetrators is still alive and accessible to the filmmaker —Costa demands answers, refusing to allow such a history to remain buried.

108 Cuchillo de Palo (Spain/Paraguay, documentary, 2010, 93 minutes) was an official selection at the Cannes and the Vancouver International Film Festival. It won Best Film at the Buenos Aires Human Rights Film Festival and the One World Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in Prague.
