'Bajarí: Barcelona' at EUFF

Screening of the Spanish documentary 'Bajarí: Barcelona' at the European Union Film Festival (EUFF).

Founded in 1984, The European Union Film Festival is an annual showcase of the best of contemporary cinema produced in the European Union. Each country has carte blanche to choose the film that will represent them. Together, their exciting selections make for a lively, provocative, stimulating, and entertaining state-of-the-Union celebration of the diversity, dynamism, and accomplishment of contemporary European filmmaking.

The Spanish documentary Bajarí: Barcelona will be screened at The Royal in Toronto, the Canadian Film Institute in Ottawa, and at the Pacific Cinémathèque in Vancouver.

Flamenco is one of the world’s few art forms that is believed to be passed down exclusively through bloodlines. For Barcelona’s Gypsy community, it cannot be learned at a school or on paper. It is lived within the home, created at the bar and perfected on the street corner. Bajarí goes to all those places with dancer Karime Amaya, who is working with some of the most talented musicians and dancers to create an innovative show, and newcomer Juanito Manzano, a five-year old dancer who earns his white flamenco boots with this show. Their experiences form a journey of discovery of this living tradition, and create an intimate portrait of how flamenco’s legacy is kept alive.
